There is one word that adequately describes Genesis 1: 1 of the Bible. That word is PROFOUND. It immediately divides people into two groups: It distinguishes between those who believe that those first five words are true from those who don’t. Genesis 1: 1 (NASB) starts out saying, ”In the beginning, God created…” Believers in that first truth can use it as the basis for accepting the rest of the scriptures as reliable and true too.

For everyone else they begin a slippery slope where they either reject God outright or follow a path that leads to thinking they are at least as important as God. This leads to a position in the world where people no longer see a need for God. It’s like them saying, “Hey, we’re getting along just fine, so please God don’t upset the applecart we have created for ourselves.” The problem lies in the fact that the applecart will be upset sooner or later and God didn’t do it.  We’re all mortal, what will be the ultimate destination of everyone’s souls, when eternity comes calling? (Having a soul is a lengthy discussion but everyone does have one.)

Being a living, breathing human being that has the ability to think for themselves puts everyone in a precarious position. You see In Romans Paul tells us mankind is without excuse. Paul writes in Romans 1: 18-20, “¹⁸For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, ¹⁹because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. ²⁰For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” The word ‘evidence,’ used twice in verse 19 and the words ‘clearly seen’ used in verse 20 are more significant than they might initially appear. They contain significant information.

Evidence, whether being looked at from a naturalist’s or an apologist’s perspective is trying to establish “facts.” Facts are one of those peculiar things in how they will always be interpreted by the presuppositions you hold. This makes facts contingent upon the world view you hold.  Truth on the other hand is not limited in the same manner.  However, evidence as facts can support that which is true.

A while ago, as I was developing and presenting an adult Sunday school curriculum a new ‘Ah Ha’ moment occurred. Granted becoming a parent changes the priority’s in one one’s life. But one can also see it as supporting evidence for Gods existence. This evidence may, through the course of time, alter the world view some non-believers hold.

First, along with becoming new parents there comes the realization that they are not at the center of the universe. If nothing else, the new parent sees that their baby as a welcome usurper. Regretfully, some overbearing and pompous parents believe their child is better than and superior to anyone else’s offspring. Other times there is an unwanted child, which is seen simply as a hindrance to what that parent desires.

However, there is another thing becoming a new parent helps to explain. New parents shower their new baby, their “creation” with much love, care and attention – at least those who want their child normally follow this practice. So for just a moment, let us think about how new parents shower good things and care for their babies is the same thing we experience from our God and Creator. One can go forward and show how much this holds true with God’s continuing to love man in spite of the fall of mankind. It directly correlates to parents loving a child right through those inconsistent times and years, where that child is learning his or her own way in this world.

 I think the picture can be fully drawn out from here. In either case the evidence holds, the end product is the goal. For Christians those goals are similar with God. Where ultimately God wants to be, as the Lord’s prayer in Mathew 6: 9 indicates, “Our Father who is in Heaven.” This is indicative of a God who loves his creation unconditionally and only wants the best for us in just the same way as that new parent. Not only that, but God wants his people to become mature and righteous as He is righteous. Man sinned and destroyed his right relationship with God. But God knew that by sending His Son to take upon Himself the penalty of our transgression, called propitiation; God has given us a way to be God’s redeemed children through the salvation offered to us through Jesus Christ’s shed blood. God made the ultimate sacrifice for us. In some instances parents have had to make the same degree of sacrifice, and did so willingly. Think about that. We have an inherent evidence for a God who ultimately loves us with a love un-surpassing. John 3: 16 gave us a succinct verse that tells us how much this love means. For those to whom it is unfamiliar this verse proclaims, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” This eternal Truth is worth sharing to a lost people foundering in a ‘sea’ of insubstantial facts.
